365Books: All the President’s Men by Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein

All the President's Men by Carl Bernstein | Open Library

When the world feels chaotic, read about chaos resolving itself, that’s my rule.

So right now, instead of reading online news or watching the news or late night comedy or YouTube videos or listening to podcasts, I’m reading All the President’s Men. Chaos, stress, and then – it all works out in the end and the bad guys go to jail.

If you want to read a great, fast-paced book, that captures the feeling of people rushing to get the job done, rushing to connect the dots and solve the mystery, this is it.

And the bad guys go to jail in the end.

And the WaPo newspaper is a hero.

Ah, how times have changed!

Can you believe there was a time when politicians stood up against their president to do what’s right?

Can you believe there was a time when politicians resigned if they were caught doing something wrong, something embarrassing that they should feel guilty about?

Oh, the good old days. Those of you too young to believe it probably feel like I’m telling you that I walked to school both ways uphill, in the snow, like your parents.

Washington has always been dirty – look at what happens in Hamilton‘s smoke-filled rooms – but it used to be ashamed of being caught being dirty. Now, they brag about it and their supporters cheer it on.

The movie is good, too, if you can’t focus long enough to read about it. A great acting ensemble, great cinematography, great direction, great screenwriting (and very close to the book).

So read (or watch) away.

Hold your breath until Tuesday

And Vote.
